Luna Park in Coney Island, New York City’s destination for amusement and thrills, is preparing to celebrate 10 years of the iconic Thunderbolt roller coaster with the Thunderbolt 10th Anniversary Coasterthon. As the first-ever steel roller coaster in New York City, the Thunderbolt has been the ultimate attraction for high thrills at Luna Park since it was introduced in 2014. In celebration of this milestone, Luna Park will host a charity Coasterthon on Friday, June 14, 2024, from 11 AM to 1 PM.  10 non-profit organizations will ride all eight of Luna Park’s roller coasters, marathon-style, to raise funds and awareness for their respective missions.

“We are thrilled to Celebrate 10 years of the revolutionary Thunderbolt, the 1st major custom built steel coaster in NYC with the Thunderbolt 10th Anniversary Charity Coasterthon,” said Alessandro Zamperla, President and CEO of Central Amusement International, Inc. “We are excited to continue to leverage our unique resources, skills, talents to support our community, bringing positive, and meaningful impact to South Brooklyn and beyond.”

As part of the Coasterthon, each participating organization will form a team of three riders and have two hours to ride Luna Park’s eight roller coasters, including the Thunderbolt, the historic Coney Island Cyclone, Tony’s Express, Steeplechase, Soarin’ Eagle, Circus Coaster, The Tickler, and Mini Mouse, as many times as possible. Guests can get in on the action by signing up to join the team of a charity that resonates with them and have their rides counted toward that charity’s total rides.

The charity with the most roller coaster rides at the end of the 2-hour event will receive a donation of $10,000. The second-place finisher will receive a donation of $5,000, and the third-place finisher will receive a donation of $3,000. The remaining seven organizations will each receive a donation of $1,000.

Granville T. Woods

During Black history month we celebrate and highlight Granville T. Woods.

Granville T. Woods was a Black American inventor of more than a dozen transportation devices in the 1800s, and more than 60 patents for his various inventions. He invented and introduced the first electric powered roller coaster – The Figure 8 – at Coney Island and made subway travel possible in NYC with his patented third-rail system for conducting electric power to railway cars.  He died in 1910 and was buried at St. Michael’s Cemetery in East Elmhurst, N.Y.. In 2004, New York City honored Woods with a limited edition subway card and an exhibit about him was put on display at the Brooklyn Public Library. In 2008, the corner of Stillwell and Mermaid Avenues at Coney Island Brooklyn was named Granville T. Woods Way to honor Woods’ legacy at Coney Island.

A History as Rich as Gelato

Did you know? Coney Island is the original hometown of the Frozen Custard, invented in 1919 when two Coney Island ice cream vendors, Archie and Elton Kohr, found that adding egg yolks to ice cream helped create a smoother texture and kept the ice cream cold longer. According to some reports, he sold 18,460 cones of the frozen custard novelty in one weekend. 😳

Ice Cream, Gelato, Frozen Custard? What’s the difference? 🤔

Apart from the egg in the custard, well, nothing, technically. While air is not typically thought of as an ingredient, it is one of the characteristics that sets the frozen treats apart. The air, though not deliberately forced into the cream, is inherently incorporated into the creamy treats by mixing and affects both denseness and consistency. Typically, a traditional soft serve will be comprised of about 50% air, while gelato and frozen custard enjoy higher densities. On average, gelato and frozen custards are comprised of 7.5-15% air. Other differences in the three categories include the fat content in the cream. 👩‍🔬

In addition, COVID-19 frontline workers will receive 15% on their entire purchase by showing their employee ID.

Other flavors available this Memorial Day weekend are: Vanilla, Chocolate, Custard, Mint Chocolate, Amarena Yogurt, Cappuccino, Rum Raisin, Milano Cookie, Coconut Covered Chocolate. As well as, Mango, Strawberry, and Raspberry sorbet.

Be a part of Coney Island History by reserving your Luna Park in Coney Island commemorative brick which will be laid at the entrance of Luna Park April 11, 2020.

Have your message and memories engraved on a commemorative brick.
Help us pave the way to memories that will last a lifetime!

Starting at $150, your purchase entitles you to a keepsake engraved with your own personalized/special message. This is a great way to honor friends and family.  When purchasing the 4″ x 8″ Brick, you have up to 3 lines with a total of 20 characters to express yourself. If you are interesting in the larger option the 8″ x 8″ Brick allows 5 lines with a total of 20 characters.
