LUNA PARK’S ICONIC CONEY ISLAND CYCLONE ROLLER COASTER REOPENS, READY TO THRILL VISITORS ONCE AGAIN

BROOKLYN, NY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2024: Luna Park in Coney Island is excited to announce the reopening of the world-famous Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster – today, Saturday, September 7 at 11:00am EST. Following a brief closure for maintenance, this beloved American treasure is ready to once again deliver heart-pounding thrills to visitors from around the globe.

Since its debut on June 26, 1927, the Coney Island Cyclone has been a core fixture of the Coney Island Amusement District and remains one of Luna Park’s most cherished operating landmarks. Located at the intersection of Surf Avenue and West 10th Street, this wooden wonder reaches a maximum speed of 60 miles per hour and boasts a total track length of 2,640 feet.

Over the years, the Zamperla family has invested millions of dollars of their private funds to restore the Coney Island Cyclone and continues their financial commitment to ensure New Yorkers and visitors alike can experience the iconic roller coaster for generations to come. Their company, Central Amusement International Inc., is a family-owned amusement park developer and operator whose management team has more than 150 years of combined amusement industry experience that specializes in revitalizing and preserving historic entertainment venues.

“We are incredibly honored to preserve the legacy of the Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster and offer memorable experiences on this historic coaster, year after year. This American icon has captivated guests for nearly a century, and our dedicated team and attraction engineers continue to ensure that this legendary 97-year-old landmark continues to operate safely and smoothly,” said Alessandro Zamperla, President and CEO of Central Amusement International, Inc. “We are always thrilled to welcome riders to experience the Cyclone every season.”

Recognized as both a New York City Landmark (1988) and listed in the National Register of Historic Places (1991), the Cyclone has been featured in major films, music videos, and works of art. It stands as a cultural phenomenon and one of Brooklyn’s most iconic sites. Often called the “Mother of rollercoasters” and the “Big Momma” of Coney Island, the Cyclone consistently tops the list of must-do experiences for visitors to New York City.

During Black history month we celebrate and highlight Granville T. Woods.

Granville T. Woods was a Black American inventor of more than a dozen transportation devices in the 1800s, and more than 60 patents for his various inventions. He invented and introduced the first electric powered roller coaster – The Figure 8 – at Coney Island and made subway travel possible in NYC with his patented third-rail system for conducting electric power to railway cars.  He died in 1910 and was buried at St. Michael’s Cemetery in East Elmhurst, N.Y.. In 2004, New York City honored Woods with a limited edition subway card and an exhibit about him was put on display at the Brooklyn Public Library. In 2008, the corner of Stillwell and Mermaid Avenues at Coney Island Brooklyn was named Granville T. Woods Way to honor Woods’ legacy at Coney Island.

BROOKLYN, NY, June 13, 2023Luna Park in Coney Island, New York City’s most iconic destination for fun, is gearing up to honor a momentous occasion celebrating the park’s historic expansion and the 120th anniversary of Luna Park’s original inception in 1903. On June 21st beginning at 6:00 PM, Luna Park will celebrate the historic expansion, featuring NYC’s first 50ft oceanside ropes courses and adventure zones, integrated roller coaster and water flume attractions, food and beverage locations, and pedestrian plazas. Guests, visitors, and local community members alike can join in on this incredible celebration like never before with a free event featuring special carnival-style performances, music, entertainment, and treats at the new main entrance of Luna Park on Stillwell Avenue.

For over a century, Luna Park has been part of the iconography of amusement parks, inspiring namesakes that provide fun and joy for families across the world. Today Luna Park honors that rich heritage of the most influential park in the world by creating history with the future. Its newest additions pay homage to the history of the Amusement District in Coney Island and enhance the unique Brooklyn heritage and identity that Luna Park is known for today.

“We are overjoyed to celebrate this expansion, a milestone that pays homage to the enduring spirit of fun and joy that has defined this beloved Amusement District and our community throughout its history,” said Alessandro Zamperla, President and CEO of Central Amusement International Inc. “With the addition of these new attractions, food and beverage locations, and pedestrian plazas, we are excited to continue to celebrate the legacy of Coney Island by bringing the finest amusement park experience to New York City.”

“I am thrilled that one of our city’s most iconic spaces will be not only celebrated and highlighted but expanded to provide even more fun and excitement for all of our families this summer and beyond,” said Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton. “We are so fortunate to have such a historic and symbolic entertainment destination in Southern Brooklyn and I look forward to its continued enhancements, improvements, and investments for both visitors and local community members.”

“Luna Park has been at the heart of New York City summer fun for the last 120 years, and today, we celebrate this historic expansion,” said New York City Economic Development Corporation President & CEO Andrew Kimball. “The new attractions, pedestrian plazas, and food and beverage locations will uplift the local economy and arrives just in time for New Yorkers from across the five boroughs – and tourists – to enjoy this summer.”

“For so many New Yorkers, Luna Park and Coney Island are synonymous with summer fun, and this expansion gives New Yorkers and visitors even more great features to enjoy, including Luna Park’s new oceanside ropes courses,” added NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. “I encourage all New Yorkers to take the trip out to Coney Island and check out the new pedestrian plazas, rides, food & beverage options, and other attractions that are enhancing this iconic part of a New York City summer.”

“I am very excited to join many Coney Island residents and other visitors at the wonderful celebration of the historic expansion of Luna Park and its 120 years anniversary. Proud to represent the neighborhood that is home to the New York City largest and most famous amusement park. Congratulations to Alessandro Zamperla and the entire team at Luna Park for providing world class attractions and entertainment, as well as creating many local jobs and additional opportunities for Coney Island businesses!” said District 47 NYC Councilman, Ari Kagan.

“You can never have too much of a good thing and who would ever say “no,” to more Coney Island?, said District 43 Councilmember Justin Brannan. “With heartfelt gratitude to the Zamperla Family and New York City Economic Development Corporation, we are finally activating new parts of this historic amusement district with four new attractions and a new pedestrian plaza for all to enjoy. Let’s remember: Coney Island isn’t just an iconic, world-famous destination – it is a vibrant, hardworking, and resilient neighborhood that deserves nothing but the best all year round. This is a very exciting day.”

“Congratulations to Luna Park on 120 years of serving as an iconic landmark not just in Brooklyn, but across New York City, bringing family fun and entertainment to locals and tourist from all over,” said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. “Luna Park’s legacy and longevity has stood the test of time mainly due to the amusement park’s ability to reinvent itself, surviving ebbs and flows of visitors, economic recessions, new trends in entertainment, and more. Its latest historic expansion is yet another example of this agility. I can’t wait to enjoy with my own family.”

Luna Park’s return breathed new life into the historic Amusement District, reinvigorating its storied past, benefiting the small business community in Coney Island, bringing record revenues to the Riegelmann Boardwalk businesses, and providing thousands of job opportunities to the broader South Brooklyn. Through their investments and commitment, Central Amusement International Inc. was able to bring Coney Island’s Amusement District back to the focal point of business in the area and invigorate its economy with the opening of a re-imagined, re-created, and re-vitalized Luna Park in Coney Island.

LUNA PARK IN CONEY ISLAND PAYS HOMAGE TO FAMILY ROOTS WITH NEW RIDE NAMES

New York City’s Iconic Amusement Park Honors Family History with New Roller Coaster and Log Flume Ride Opening this Summer

With a highly anticipated season ahead, iconic amusement park, Luna Park in Coney Island is thrilled to announce the official names of its brand-new attractions officially opening this Summer.

Making its global debut, the new roller coaster, custom made for Coney Island, will be named “Tony’s Express,” and the bespoke log flume ride will be known as “Leti’s Treasure,” the Zamperla family – owners of Central Amusement International Inc. (“CAI”) and Luna Park in Coney Island – and their legacy of five generations in the amusement industry.

Tony’s Express and Leti’s Treasure are set to be intertwined rides created to provide guests with a unique experience that showcases innovation and the rich heritage of Coney Island.  The vehicles and the boats design pay homage to Coney Island’s historic attractions Switchback Railway and The Chutes while the illuminated station house, archways, and tracks reestablishes Luna Park as “The Electric Eden.” The integrated rides represent a unique marriage of experiences and pay tribute to CAI’s President and CEO, Alessandro Zamperla’s grandparents, the late Antonio and Letizia Zamperla.

With roots in circus, carnival rides, and ride manufacturing, Antonio Zamperla became the first Italian to be inducted into the IAAPA Hall of Fame in 2005, due to his significant contributions to the amusement industry.  Antonio’s wife Letizia was the matriarch of the family, who used to drive tractor-trailers loaded with rides delivering happiness across Europe.  During her childhood, Letizia was often found playing by the Piave River in Italy, the inspiration behind the name of the Super Flume attraction coming to Luna Park in Coney Island.

Tony’s Express is a family friendly coaster that will bend and curve around Leti’s Treasure at more than 40 mph with more than 1200 exhilarating feet of track, comprised of two enchanting trains equipped with ADA access.  Leti’s Treasure is a massive log flume that will operate with 12 flume boats seating up to six guests at a time, lifting riders up to 40 feet in the air and providing a semi-circle panoramic view of Coney Island’s shoreline, before plunging down to a speed of over 35mph for a big splash.

In addition to the roller coaster and log flume ride, Luna Park will also unveil the 50-foot custom designed Sky Chaser Ropes Course and pedestrian plazas as part of its 2022 expansion, where the park is developing 5 acres along the Coney Island Boardwalk and Surf Avenue.  The historic expansion will increase Luna Park in Coney Island’s size by 50% and will activate areas in Coney Island that had been vacant for over 40 years.  The expansion will be the newest asset to the Coney Island Amusement District and is set to create an additional 100 jobs and increase visitorship in South Brooklyn. Stay tuned for announcements regarding the opening date!

LUNA PARK IN CONEY ISLAND NEWS RELEASE

BROOKLYN, NY, June 15, 2021
– The iconic amusement park, Luna Park in Coney Island, known for its high thrills and exhilarating attractions, has donated 10,000 wristbands to VAX4NYC, as part of the City’s effort to incentivize COVID-19 vaccinations.

New Yorkers who receive their first COVID-19 vaccine dose at a participating vaccination site can choose to get a unique bar code to redeem one Family Fun Wristband, and one ride on the Coney Island Cyclone Roller Coaster through the VAX4NYC Incentive Portal.

“We are proud to partner with the City of New York to further incentivize our local communities to get vaccinated,” said Alessandro Zamperla, President and CEO of Central Amusement International Inc. “As the public health conditions keep improving thanks to New Yorkers’ resilience and solidarity, we look forward to welcoming more guests having fun and making wonderful memories at Luna Park in Coney Island this summer.”

To redeem the complimentary wristbands, eligible guests can bring their email printout with their unique code to Luna Park in Coney Island’s guest services booth during operating hours on any weekday at least two hours before the park closes. The offer is not valid on weekends or holidays and is for one-time use.

Luna Park in Coney Island continues to celebrate and support NYC’s healthcare efforts in 2021 with donations to local healthcare heroes and donations to help incentivize New Yorkers to get vaccinated. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Luna Park in Coney Island was unable to hold their annual opening “Donation Day” where they offer free admission wristbands to the local community and raise money for local charities on opening day. After a COVID-19 initiated 18-month shut-down, the iconic location is finding alternative ways to safely give back to the local community with this year’s focus on health care and well-being.

Since the vaccine rollout began, New York City has administered more than 8.5 million COVID-19 vaccine doses. In May, the City launched its robust incentives program to continue to mobilize New Yorkers to get their life-saving COVID-19 vaccine.

Every year Luna Park in Coney Island has been organizing a Community Thanksgiving Event to help our neighbors in Coney Island that are food insecure.

Alessandro Zamperla transports sanitizing stations to the community event to keep everyone safe.

With the support of other local businesses and organizations, we have been able to help feed more than 1,000 local residents every Thanksgiving Day as part of our mission to help people in need. This Thanksgiving, like everything else these days, is different from past years as the pandemic has created more challenges in our community – but our drive to help has become stronger than ever.  Yesterday, equipped with hand sanitizing stations, social distancing, masks, and gloves, we were able to provide over 1000 Thanksgiving meals safely “to-go” to our neighbors in need.

We joined our community partners from Coney Island Gospel Assembly, Gargiulo’s restaurant, Alliance for Coney Island and elected officials, NY State Senator Diane Savino and NY City Councilmember Mark Treyger, and local residents and businesses to organize the event.

With further support from Assemblymember Mathylde Frontus, NYPD 60th precinct, Liberty Coca-Cola, A&J Produce, Coney Island Prep, Kings Highway Bakery, iStar, Mets Giving, MTM Fuel Service, Nathan’s Famous, the Brooklyn Cyclones, Deno’s Wonderwheel, and the Rotary Club of Verrazano, over 1,000 delicious Thanksgiving meals to-go consisting of turkey, stuffing, potatoes, dessert and more were provided to local residents at La Tombola, located at the Ford Amphitheater, on the Boardwalk at West 21st Street.

We know this year has been challenging, but we also know that New Yorkers are strong. We are so proud of and thankful for all of our team-members who volunteered and made this community Thanksgiving event a success! Your contributions to the greater community are valued and appreciated. By continuing to take care of each other we’ll come back stronger than ever.

Alessandro Zamperla watches a presentation at CPNYC with children and teens participating in the CPNYC programing.

You know the deal, in 2018 we began our “Charity Day” tradition where we reduce our ride admission prices and donate all proceeds to an organization that is helping our community move toward a better future. This year we selected Children of Promise, NYC  because of its commitment to helping children and teens of incarcerated parents who are often forgotten about and left behind in our communities. Part of CAI’s mission is to create more joy for our entire community, through shared fun experiences, employment opportunities, education and empowerment, and through the promoting and supporting organizations that are making a positive difference in our community every day.

“Everyone at CPNYC was thrilled to be included in such an important day at Luna Park. It helps our children immensely to know that an organization like Luna Park and their staff see them, value them, and want to support them in building a healthy and productive future for themselves,” said Sharon Content, President of Children of Promise, NYC.

“We are so grateful to have partnered with Children of Promise, NYC this year, and to greatly benefit the families who are a part of the amazing organization,” said Alessandro Zamperla, President of Central Amusement International. “We also want to thank the local Brooklyn community for their overwhelming support on Charity Day and hope to continue this tradition in years to come.”

Alessandro Zamperla (right) answers questions from children participating in CPNYC.

On “Charity Day” 2019, guests received Luna Park in Coney Island unlimited rides wristbands for a donation of $10.00 and with those generous gifts we were able to raise $107,000 for Children of Promise, NYC.

Alessandro Zamperla (left) presents Sharon Content (right) with a check for $107,009.

CAI also provided children an teens registered in the CPNYC program with free visits to Luna Park in Coney Island through the CPNYC summer camp programs.
